Youth Classes

Youth Honors Academy

Instructor: Linda Rae                                Ages: 10-16

Day: Wednesday Time: 4:15-5:45pm              Dates: Ongoing

Cost: $70 for 4 consecutive weeks

Drawing, painting, collage and mixed media for serious young artists. The curriculum is designed upon the current students’ needs and interests. Prospective students must submit a portfolio and interview with the instructor.

After School Art Club: Observing Our World

Instructor: Mary Hemphill              Dates: Sept-      Look Down! (Sept 11-25)

Ages: 6-11                                                  Oct-       Look Around! (Oct 2-16)  

Day: Thursday    Time: 4:00-5:30pm   Nov-      Look Up! (Nov 6-20)

Cost: $40 per 3-week session                               Dec-      Look In! (Dec 4-18)

We’ll start each session with sketching in our journals, then observe our world and create art inspired by what’s around us. We’ll use a variety of media: drawing, painting, printmaking and collage. 

Homeschool Art: The Joy of Drawing

Instructor: Holly Friesen                                                       Ages: 6-10

Day:      Tuesdays           Time: 10:30am-12:00pm           Cost: $85

Dates:   9/9-10/28 (no class 10/7)

Students will create art from their observations from real life and pictures using watercolor pencils, pastels, and printmaking, ending in a class exhibit. Materials list available from instructor; other materials provided.

Homeschool Art: Paper, Paint, & Pencils 

Instructor: Mary Hemphill Ages: 10-14

Day: Thursdays Time: 1:30-3:00pm Cost: $75

Dates: Session 1: 9/11-10/16 Session 2: 11/6-12/18

Students will use their observations of the world around them to create art  with a variety of media such as pencils, paint, printmaking, and collage.

Adult Classes & Studios

Beginning Drawing

Days: Tuesdays             Time: 5:30-7:30pm                     Ages: 16+

Dates:    Session 1: Sept 16-Oct 28 (no class Oct 7)

              Session 2: Nov 11-Dec 16

Cost: $80          (min. enrollment 5)

Students will be introduced to a variety of drawing media and papers. Contour drawing, drawing on the “right side of the brain”, values, composition, and shading, as well as speed sketching and drawing human proportions will all be offered. Beginners of various skill levels are welcome. This class is a prerequisite to Intermediate Drawing. All materials must be provided by the student.

Beaded Jewelry Design

Instructor: Susan Bruton

Days: Mondays Time: 5:30-7:30pm Ages: 16+

Dates: Oct 27-Nov 10

Cost: $45 (min. enrollment 4)

Artist Susan Bruton will work with you to select the best beads for your style, teach you how to work with different fasteners, and assemble them into a necklace and earring set. The first class will meet at a local craft store where Susan will assist you with purchasing your own beads & findings.

All materials must be provided by the student.

Art Glass Mosaics

Instructor: Susan Bruton

Days: Mondays Time: 5:30-7:30pm Ages: 16+

Dates: Nov 17-Dec 1

Cost: $45 (min. enrollment 4)

Learn how to make glass mosaics that resemble stained glass but without the copper foil or soldering! Artist Susan Bruton will teach you how to make an 11x14 mosaic using easy to find materials and little to no equipment. Some materials must be provided by the student. A materials list will be emailed to you upon enrollment.

Watercolor Studio

MAC Watercolor Studio meets weekly to paint, critique and encourage one another in an effort to improve their painting skills.  They also invite guest speakers and host workshops open to the community.  Email marketing@manhattanarts.org to learn more.

Oil Painting Studio

MAC Oils Studio meets weekly to inspire one another and paint.  This non-toxic oil painting studio has a fee of $5 per month and is open to anyone who has previous oil painting experience.  Email marketing@manhattanarts.org to learn more.
